The State of Contingent Workforce Management report, published in November by Ardent Partners, outlined a series of groundbreaking findings that proved that the burgeoning contingent workforce (also known as non-traditional or non-employee labor) was not only heading for continued growth (30% over the next few years), but also expected to reach a point where nearly half (45%-to-50%) of the total global workforce would be considered non-employee by the end of 2017.

While it’s not shocking to experience this level of growth within an industry that has been developing for quite some time (the true rise in the utilization of non-employee labor was sparked by the “perfect storm” of the economic downturn of the last decade combined with the realization of benefits for this type of workforce), the fact of the matter is that too many enterprises don’t understand the requirements of the space and actively fail to address the contemporary intricacies of non-traditional talent. Consider that:

  • Compliance regulations evolve on a yearly basis (i.e. Affordable Care Act).
  • What is known as “contingent labor” traverses beyond simple staffing suppliers to include freelancers, independent contractors, and complex contingent labor (i.e. SOW, services, etc.).
  • Procurement must work with Human Resources to effectively capture and manage the nuances of modern non-employee talent.
  • Avenues such as Big Data and mobile applications play significant roles in how non-traditional talent should be managed.
  • A simple spend management strategy isn’t enough to address all the needs of a CWM program, and;
  • There is much focus in today’s “flex economy” on the talent components of non-employee labor management.

These issues will all be addressed in our upcoming webinar. We encourage all procurement, HR, and finance executives to listen in, as we will unveil a series of predictions for the year ahead, as well as a variety of recommendations and strategies that will ensure success beyond 2015.
