It was interesting to note that one CPO recently said
“There is a myth about a clash between local demands and group benefits. We don’t see it. In our company, they are very aligned.” in this recent article: https://cporising.com/2011/09/30/cpos-on-the-rise-in-2011-calling-all-suppliers/

The center-led category approach needs to be carefully assessed. It is most beneficial for categories that can truly be globally managed and have cross-regional synergy. For most large corporations, there are usually a large number of categories that may appear to be good candidates for center-led approach, but they have significant differences in regional market conditions, supplier capabilities, technology and stakeholder business needs. This can present major challenges for center-led Category Managers to build strategy and set plans of execution across a number of very different regions for the company's business.
