This 13th annual CPO report is one that I first started writing in 2006 and has become, in many ways, the defining report at Ardent Partners. Over the years the report has tackled various themes, including People and Spend Management (2006), the Rise of the CPO (2008), the Tough Times… of the global recession (2009), Procurement-led Innovation (2011), and Procurement Agility (2015), to name a few.

This year’s theme is “The Age of Intelligence.” Today, process-automation tools can enable fewer hands to transact greater volumes of work, which has allowed Chief Procurement Officers and their teams to shift their focus to the strategic parts of the business, like relationship-building and long-term planning. The tools have also helped practitioners and leaders extract more value out of their processes by capturing and managing procurement, supplier, and third-party data. The key to value creation, however, is for CPOs and other procurement pros to convert these data streams into intelligence; and then leverage that intelligence to make faster, more-informed decisions across the full scope of operations. In the Age of Intelligence, procurement teams will have an unprecedented opportunity to become smarter, more agile organizations that can extend and enhance their capabilities and accelerate to the next level of performance. This year’s survey also asks questions to gain an understanding of your procurement department’s recent performance and overall focus for the year ahead.

Readers of this site know that the data we collect from the survey is used to define Best-in-Class procurement performance for 2018 and fuels many new articles on this site. The report will also have strong linkage to our 2018 CPO Rising Summit that will be held in Boston this fall (watch for our upcoming announcement).
